I was really excited to play Dead Space, and it is a good game. It just isn't enough of a step forward in the genre to stand out.
The strength of the game is its production value (the graphics and sound are very well done). The story is decent enough (there's even a twist), but didn't really grab me like I'd hoped. The controls work well enough, but jumping in zero gravity isn't as much fun as I had hoped. The kicker is that everything absolutely goes to hell when your character is grabbed by a "boss" and goes upside down (the controls get "reversed", but I've dealt with reversed controls before without much issue. These game sequences were extraordinarily frustrating for me.
Perhaps most importantly, the game has very little replay value, if any. I tried to play through the game a second time for some achievements and couldn't make it. It's just not quite fun enough to play a second time.
Overall, Dead Space is a good game, but a 4-year old game from the same genre (Resident Evil 4) is much better even today.
